Title: DNA extraction method with improved efficiency and specificity using DNA methyltransferase and click chemistry

Abstract: In an attempt to develop an alternative method to extract DNA from complex samples with much improved sensitivity and efficiency, here we report a proof-of-concept work for a new DNA extraction method using DNA methyltransferase (Mtase) and click chemistry. According to our preliminary data, the method has improved the current methods by (i) employing a DNA-specific enzyme, TaqI DNA Mtase, for improved selectivity, and by (ii) capturing the DNA through covalent bond to the functionalized surface, enabling a broad range of treatments yielding the final sample DNA with minimal loss and higher purity such that it will be highly compatible with downstream analyses. By employing Mtase, a highly DNA specific and efficient enzyme, and click chemistry, we demonstrated that as little as 0.1 fg of k-DNA (close to copy number 1) was captured on silica (Si)-based beads by forming a covalent bond between an azide group on the surface and the propargyl moiety on the DNA. This method holds promise in versatile applications where extraction of minute amounts of DNA plays critical roles such as basic and applied molecular biology research, bioforensic and biosecurity sciences, and state-of-the-art detection methods.

Title: The Application of Coal Cleaning Detection System based on Embedded Real-time Image Processing

Abstract: This paper introduces a high-speed image processing of embedded systems based on FPGA and DSP collaboration used in coal preparation detection technology. The system uses a modular design, including a real-time image acquisition module, DSP image processing module, and peripheral interface module. The image processing required doing the following arithmetic operations, including image smoothing to enhance, edge detection, region segmentation, gray-scale analysis, pattern recognition. After completion of the above algorithm, the system determines the image feature of coal and gangue, particularly their gray scale values and the center of gravity. By analysis of the characteristics of the image, the system identifies the gangue. The image processing is conducive to the follow-up to discharge refuse treatment.

Title: Business Process based Initial Modeling at Software Development

Abstract: The fundamental problem of high-level quality software development is the elaboration of well-designed and correct model of the developing system. The most critical phase is the “birth” of the model, the specification of the initial model. This paper describes the method to use the already existing Business Process Model to set up the initial model for the software to be developed. Especially Business Process Management systems can be well described by business processes using workflow. This paper makes recommendations how to incorporate workflow in the development process. The basic principle of the method to elaborate the initial model is that using the usually already existing workflow an UML action diagram can be worked out with the help of mapping that can be a useful additional source for further development processes.

Title: Qcompiler: Quantum compilation with the CSD method

Abstract: In this paper, we present a general quantum computation compiler, which maps any given quantum algorithm to a quantum circuit consisting a sequential set of elementary quantum logic gates based on recursive cosine sine decomposition. The resulting quantum circuit diagram is provided by directly linking the package output written in LaTeX to Qcircuit.tex We illustrate the use of the Qcompiler package through various examples with full details of the derived quantum circuits. Besides its accuracy, generality and simplicity, Qcompiler produces quantum circuits with significantly reduced number of gates when the systems under study have a high degree of symmetry.

Title: Traffic Information Based Power Saving Mechanism

Abstract: This paper proposes the standby power saving mechanism that the user can terminate home network appliance (Le. Personal Computer) power and standby power at the remote site. Generally, for the power management of the home appliance, it has to be put through the physical contact. In the proposed mechanism, the smartphone is offered the power on/off state information of the home network appliance on a real-time basis. The user can transmit the power-termination order to the home network appliance through the smartphone. If the home gateway receives the power-termination order from the smartphone, the power-termination order is sent to the home network appliance and the standby power is blocked. Its power and standby power can be blocked through the method to be proposed even through the user is not physically contacted with the home appliance. That is, the proposed mechanism gives convenience to the user in electric power management aspect. In addition, the power saving can be done, because reducing the unnecessary operation time and blocking the standby power of the home network appliance.

Title: Survey on Middleware Systems in Cloud Computing Integration

Abstract: Cloud computing is an increasingly attractive solution to providing cheap, scalable, and easy to deploy computing services. This paper presents a survey on the middleware technology used to integrate different cloud platforms/services, applications running in the cloud, and the cloud with on-premise data centers. We discuss the ongoing research projects and solutions being developed such as Altocumulus, AppScale, Cloudify, and mOSAIC. We analyze the features already available in current solutions as well as the future technology and standards needed to ensure seamless integration and more widespread adoption of cloud computing solutions.

Title: The Current Status of Medical Physics in Asia-Oceania

Abstract: Asia has a diverse cultural and economical background. Asia-Oceania Federation of Organization for Medical Physics (AFOMP) was born in July 2000 during the World Congress 2000 in Chicago. The aim of AFOMP was to provide a solid relationship and useful information for closer collaboration and mutual support among the AFOMP members. The purpose of this presentation is to introduce the status of medical physics in Asia-Oceania providing the information of organization, regional congress, the status of medical physicist, etc. One of major role of AFOMP is to support the development of medical physics in Asia region. To improve the status of medical physicists in Asia, a goal-oriented action plans is required: especially, developing advancement of medical physics in developing countries, strengthening the education, training and professional development of medical physicists, and promoting good relations and the exchange of information with other international related organizations through regional congress and website etc.

Title: Design for rebirth (DFRb) and data structure

Abstract: In this paper, rebirth, the methodology of design for rebirth antedate structure which it requires will be examined. Rebirth is a global strategy of product analysis for sustainable development. A methodology is developed to conceive a product according to objectives defined by its end of life and its generic engineering requirements, and this methodology is implanted in a framework. Our data structure is based on topological information from a boundary representation (B-rep) model and it processes all information relative to the life cycle of the product. The software, based on this data structure, allows predefining certain characteristics based on knowledge of the company or on the data base. This facilitates its use for a wide range of applications.

Title: Security Issues in Vehicular Networks

Abstract: Vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) have become the focus of much discussion due to its potential role in helping to improve traffic management and safety and enable a wide range of value-added services such as collision warning/avoidance and work zone warning. Because information transmitted over a vehicular network is sensitive and can affect important safety decisions, security requirements for VANETs applications prove stringent. Thus, fail-safe security is mandatory. However, providing security in vehicular networks raises important privacy concerns also worth considering. Security and privacy are the two main concerns motivating robust vehicular network designs. In this paper, we will discuss some threats and attacks that can be exploited, and in response, present some viable security solutions.

Title: An efficient parallel architecture for ray-tracing

Abstract: Real time rendering of three-dimensional scenes in high photorealistic details is a hard task, such as in the ray tracing rendering algorithm. In general, the performance achieved by a sequential software-based implementation of ray tracing is far from satisfactory. However, parallel implementations of ray tracing have been enabling reasonable real time performance, as the algorithm is embarrassingly parallel. Thus, a custom parallel design in hardware is likely to achieve an even higher performance. In this paper, we propose a hardware parallel architecture capable of dealing with the main desirable features of ray tracing, such as shadows and reflection effects, imposing low area cost and a promising rendering performance. Such architecture, called Grid RT, is based on the Uniform Grid acceleration structure and is intended to deliver massive parallelism through parallel ray-triangle intersection tests as well as parallel processing of many rays. A hardware implementation of the proposed architecture is presented, together with some performance results and resources requirements. The rendering is reduced by 80% using a grid configuration of eight processing elements.

Title: A Machine Learning-based Usability Evaluation Method for eLearning Systems

Abstract: The research presented in this paper proposes a new machine learning-based evaluation method for assessing the usability of eLearning systems. Three machine learning methods (support vector machines, neural networks and decision trees) along with multiple linear regression are used to develop prediction models in order to discover the underlying relationship between the overall eLearning system usability and its predictor factors. A subsequent sensitivity analysis is conducted to determine the rank-order importance of the predictors. Using both sensitivity values along with the usability scores, a metric (called severity index) is devised. By applying a Pareto-like analysis, the severity index values are ranked and the most important usability characteristics are identified. The case study results show that the proposed methodology enhances the determination of eLearning system problems by identifying the most pertinent usability factors. The proposed method could provide an invaluable guidance to the usability experts as to what measures should be improved in order to maximize the system usability for a targeted group of end-users of an eLearning system.

Title: Bluetooth Positioning using RSSI and Triangulation Methods

Abstract: Location based services are the hottest applications on mobile devices nowadays and the growth is continuing. Indoor wireless positioning is the key technology to enable location based services to work well indoors, where GPS normally could not work. Bluetooth has been widely used in mobile devices like phone, PAD etc. therefore Bluetooth based indoor positioning has great market potential. Radio Signal Strength (RSS) is a key parameter for wireless positioning. New Bluetooth standard (since version 2.1) enables RSS to be discovered without time consuming pre-connection. In this research, general wireless positioning technologies are firstly analysed. Then RSS based Bluetooth positioning using the new feature is studied. The mathematical model is established to analyse the relation between RSS and the distance between two Bluetooth devices. Three distance-based algorithms are used for Bluetooth positioning: Least Square Estimation, Three-border and Centroid Method. Comparison results are analysed and the ways to improve the positioning accuracy are discussed.

Title: Electron repulsion integrals for self-energy calculations

Abstract: A fast algorithm for the calculation of the electron repulsion integrals in an atomic basis is a prerequisite of any ab initio quantum chemistry method. Unlike the case of a self-consistent field (SCF) approach, correlated methods often require a full or partial integral transformation to the molecular basis. The run- time of such an algorithm scales unfavorably as O(N ? where N ? is the number of the basis function, and additionally poses high requirements on the computer memory. The problem is aggravated in the case of large highly symmetric molecules which can only be modeled by fully taking the symmetry into account (as was recently demonstrated by us in J. Chem. Phys. 135 (2011) 201103). Wedescribe here the algorithm for the calculation of the electron repulsion integrals, the transformation and their use in the correlated Green s function approach for systems with icosahedral symmetry.

Title: Clustering via geometric median shift over Riemannian manifolds

Abstract: The mean shift algorithms have been successfully applied to many areas, such as data clustering, feature analysis, and image segmentation. However, they still have two limitations. One is that they are ineffective in clustering data with low dimensional manifolds because of the use of the Euclidean distance for calculating distances. The other is that they some- times produce poor results for data clustering and image segmentation. This is because a mean may not be a point in a data set. In order to overcome the two limitations, we pro- pose a novel approach for the median shift over Riemannian manifolds that uses the geo- metric median and geodesic distances. Unlike the mean, the geometric median of a data set is one of points in the set. Compared to the Euclidean distance, the geodesic distances can better describe data points distributed on Riemannian manifolds. Based on these two facts, we first present a novel density function that characterizes points on a manifold with the geodesic distance. The shift of the geometric median over the Riemannian manifold is derived from maximizing this density function. After this, we present an algorithm for geo- metric median shift over Riemannian manifolds, together with theoretical proofs of its cor- rectness. Extensive experiments have demonstrated that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms in data clustering, image segmentation, and noise filtering on both synthetic data sets and real image databases.

Title: A Structural Analysis of Emerging Production Systems

Abstract: A cornerstone of modern production paradigms is the encapsulation of heterogeneity and system complexity. This functional encapsulation is supported by distinct architectural building blocks that once instantiated abstract, manage and control a specific system. Modern production approaches rely in semi hierarchical architectures to organize the interactions between these blocks. In runtime this specific structure promotes a self-organizing response resulting from concurrent interaction between the system�s components. This paper simulates the execution of processes in a network of mechatronic agents comprising products, processes� abstractions and resources and analyses the impact of the typical network structure envisioned by modern production paradigms in respect to the time consumed in the production process.

Title: Integration of Face Recognition and Sound Localization for a Smart Door Phone System

Abstract: This paper proposes a smart system using both face recognition and sound localization techniques to identify the faces of visitors from a door phone in much efficient and accurate ways. This system is effectively used to recognize the faces when their locations are out of the boundaries of the camera scope of the door phone. The smart door phone system proposed in this paper uses a visitor’s voice source to rotate the camera to his face and then to recognize the face accurately. The integrated system has been designed with one FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array) chip and tested for actual use in door phone environments.

Title: Adaptive Control for an HVDC Transmission Link with FACTS and a Wind Farm

Abstract: Due to the nonlinearity, uncertainty and complex-ity of the power system, it is a challenging task to design aneffective control approach based on the exact model using tradi-tional methods. In this paper, we investigate the application of anovel approximate dynamic programming (ADP) architecture,goal representation heuristic dynamic programming (GrHDP),to a large benchmark power system. Unlike traditional ADPdesign with an action network and a critic network, GrHDPintegrates the third network, a goal network, into the actor-critic design (ACD) to automatically and adaptively build an in-ternal reinforcement signal representation to facilitate learningand optimization. Then the GrHDP is employed to control thebenchmark power system including a DFIG based wind farmand a STATCOM with HVDC transmission. Various powersystem states, including the voltage of STATCOM, current ofDFIG and DC current of HVDC inverter, are provided to theGrHDP controller to generate three adaptive supplementarycontrol signals. These adaptive supplementary control signalsare then provided to the STATCOM controller, DFIG rotor sidecontroller and HVDC master control, respectively. This controlstructure is validated in Matlab/Simulink to demonstrate itseffectiveness in power system control.

Title: A framework for enabling patient monitoring via mobile ad hoc network

Abstract: A critical component of comprehensive patient monitoring is reliability in communication between the patients and the healthcare professionals without any time and location dependencies. Patient monitoring applications largely rely on infrastructure based wireless networks for signal transmission. However, infrastructure based wireless networks till date, suffer from unpredictable network coverage and have thus been attributed to the unpredictable communication reliability of patient monitoring applications. This research investigates an approach based on leveraging mobile ad hoc network to address the challenge of enhancing communication reliability in the context of patient monitoring. Mobile ad hoc network, formed among patient monitoring devices, has the potential of enhancing network coverage and enabling signal transmission from an area which has low or non-existent coverage from infrastructure based networks. In order to utilize mobile ad hoc network in the context of patient monitoring we propose (1) power management protocols that address the challenge of managing the low battery power of patient monitoring devices while maximizing communication reliability and (2) a framework that models the complex decision logic involved in leveraging mobile ad hoc network for diverse patient monitoring scenarios. Analytical evaluation of the proposed approach supports the premise that mobile ad hoc network formed among patient monitoring devices can enhance the reliability of signal transmission thereby improving the quality of patient monitoring applications. Technical and managerial implications of the research findings and the direction of future research are discussed.

Title: Common Mode Noise Modeling and Analysis of Full-Bridge DC-DC Converter

Abstract: The principle of full-bridge DC-DC converter is briefly expounded, including the two typical control methods, named limited dual polarity hard-switch control and phase-shifted soft-switch control. Then the common mode noise equivalent circuits of full-bridge DC-DC converter are deduced, taking the common mode noise of the bridge leg_s midpoint into account, and the difference between the two typical control strategies is illustrated through theoretical analysis. In the end, simulations are performed to validate the circuit models and theoretical analysis.

Title: RFID-based Location System for Forest Search and Rescue Missions

Abstract: This paper presents the framework of an RFID-based rescue robot for missing people in forest environment. The three main design considerations include the reliability, the cost, and the environmental sustainability. For that, the paper analyzes different outdoor location technologies that can be used for this task, namely GPS, WiMAX and RFID. Former research in mobile robots based on GPS and WiMAX has resulted in high costs systems while RFID offers a lower cost alternative. The aim of this work is to provide an already existing mobile robot with RFID technology. Moreover, to overcome the inability of current rescue robots to detect human presence, the addition of an Infrared camera with thermal sensors is discussed. Finally, in order to optimize the energy management and to increase the autonomy of the rescue robot, the paper presents a power supply solution using solar energy.

Title: Energy Efficient Video Decoding for the Android Operating System

Abstract: Dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) is an effective technique for reducing power consumption. Due to the increasing popularity of multimedia applications for portable consumer electronic devices, the importance on reducing their power consumption becomes significant. This paper proposed a table-based DVFS mechanism for frame decoding that reduces the power consumption of a processor by exploiting the frame decoding complexity. A table-based DVFS predictor is used in the frame decoding prediction. This study was implemented in the Android operating system on an Intel PXA27x embedded platform. Experiment results showed that the energy consumption of decoding videos can be reduced from 9% to 17%, whereas the frame drop-rate is less than 3%.

Title: An efficient B + -tree design for main-memory database systems with strong access locality

Abstract: This paper is motivated by the strong demands of many main-memory database applications with strong locality in data access, such as front-end logistical systems. We propose to adopt an auxiliary-tree approach with an tree-merging algorithm to efficiently handle bursty data insertions with keys in a small range and avoid significant overheads in tree rebalancing. A range-based deletion algorithm is then proposed to process data deletions with strong access locality in a batch fashion. The capability of the proposed approach is evaluated by a series of experiments with a wide range of workloads and a variety of locality patterns, where different tree index structures are compared in terms of the performance and memory space requirements.

Title: Indoor Air Quality Control for Energy-Efficient Buildings Using CO 2 Predictive Model

Abstract: In this paper, an intelligent control system for indoor air quality in energy-efficient buildings is proposed. The goal of intelligent air quality control for energy-efficient buildings is to maintain the indoor CO 2 concentration in the comfort zone with a minimum amount of energy consumption. In this study, the CO 2 concentration is used as the indicator of indoor air quality and a CO 2 predictive model is utilized to forecast the indoor CO2 concentration. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is applied to derive the optimal ventilation rate. As compared with the traditional ON/OFF ventilation control system, the performance of the proposed intelligent control system has demonstrated its advantage in terms of energy savings. A case study and corresponding simulation results are detailed in the paper.

Title: Function optimisation by learning automata

Abstract: This paper presents a new algorithm, Function Optimisation by Learning Automata (FOLA), to solve complex function optimisation problems. FOLA consists of multiple automata, in which each automaton undertakes dimensional search on a selected dimension of the solution domain. A search action is taken on a path which is identified in the search space by the path value, and the path value is updated using the values of the states visited in the past, via a state memory that enables better use of the information collected in the optimisation process. In this paper, FOLA is compared with two popularly used particle swarm optimisers and four newly-proposed optimisers, on nine complex multi-modal benchmark functions. The experimental results have shown that in comparison with the other optimisers, FOLA offers better performance for most of the benchmark functions, in terms of its convergence rate and accuracy, and it uses much less computation time to obtain accurate solutions, especially for high-dimensional functions. In order to explore the FOLA s potential for applications, it is also applied to solve an optimal power flow problem of power systems. FOLA is able to minimise the fuel cost and enhance the voltage stability of the power system more efficiently in comparison with the other algorithms.

Title: Augmenting the World using Semantic Web Technologies

Abstract: Creating and maintaining augmented scenes for mobile Augmented Reality browsers can be a challenging and time consuming task. The timeliness of digital information artifacts connected to changing urban environments require authors to constantly update the structural representations of augmented scenes or to accept that the information will soon be outdated. We present an approach for retrieving multimedia content and relevant web services for mobile Augmented Reality applications at runtime. Using semantic web technologies we are able to postpone the retrieval of actual media items to the moment a user actually perceives an augmented scene. This allows content creators to augment a scene only once and avoid continuous manual updates. We also discuss the tradeoff between runtime content retrieval using Linked Data concepts and decreased control over the scene appearance at the time of authoring that comes along with this approach.

Title: A high abstraction level approach for detecting feature interactions between telecommunication services

Abstract: When several telecommunication services are running at the same time, undesirable behaviors may arise, which are commonly called feature interactions. Several methods have been developed for detecting and resolving feature interactions. However, most of these methods are based on detailed models of services, which make them suffer from state space explosion. Moreover, different telecommunication operators cannot cooperate to manage feature interactions by exchanging detailed service models because this violates the confidentiality principle. Our work is a part of the few attempts to develop feature interaction detection methods targeting to avoid or reduce significantly state space explosion. In order to reach this objective, we first develop a so called Cause Restrict language to model subscribers of telecommunication services at a very high abstraction level. A Cause Restrict model of a subscriber provides information such as: what is the cause of what, and what restricts (or forbids) what, and specifies coarsely the frequency of each operation cause or restrict by always or sometimes. Then, we develop a method that detects feature interactions between telecommunication services modeled in the Cause Restrict language. We demonstrate the applicability of our approach by modeling several services and detecting several feature interactions between them. New feature interactions have been detected by our approach.
